Children & Robots

Ethic Minds Institute

Session 320

Thursday, 10 July 2025 16:30–17:30 (UTC+02:00) Physical (on-site) and Virtual (remote) participation Room K, Palexpo Emerging Technologies Interactive Session 1 Document

Ethical implications of the AI Economy

What does data provenance, cryptography, quantum computing, and AI-powered robots have to do with children? Come discuss just this. As we move closer to AI-powered humanoid robots becoming part of the societal landscape, it is imperative that we consider and plan for the well-being of children. AI companions, ever more "life-life" and "personal", for adults and children alike will become more integrated into daily life. Children will grow up with and share secrets and trust with Robots. In a real sense, children are stakeholders in the AI and Robot Economy and will help shape it, and yet, adult individuals and society has a duty of care and responsibility for children.

The panel will present probable future scenarios facing children and the AI Economy, highlight the ethical issues raised by it, and discuss practical and realistic steps we may take to protect children and their data (such as data vaults, local AI options, creating personalized AIs, etc.)

Technical solutions for ethical care of children exist and may be innovated. What is needed is a heightened awareness of what is at stake for their futures and the common resolve and goal-setting to prioritze their well-being.

Christine Housel
Christine Housel Ethics and AI Ethics Advisor Multilateral Group (Australia/Switzerland/United States) Moderator

Christine Housel is a respected leader in the fields of youth development, ecumenical work, human rights advocacy, and education. With ETHIC Minds Institute and Multilateral Group (MLG), she is building and promoting ethical AI products and their supporting infrastructure and the correlating education and policy contribution. She has a special emphasis on putting our children front and centre in the ways in which we as the human family steer the design and use of AI and other emerging technologies. She seeks to inspire other 'normies' to develop the responsibility, knowledge, and confidence to play and active and informed role as human stakeholders in the AI Age.

With an academic background in philosophy and theology (Master of Divinity from Yale University), 25 years of international and intercultural life, and work that is mission driven and centered on ethics and human community, she is convinced that emerging technologies offer a window for us to regain a practice of and training ourselves to think about the implications of our actions at every stage, and to find the incentives needed to apply strong ethical foundations to the way we build, employ, educate about, govern and guide, and self-regulate our technology.

Christine's expertise includes facilitating and holding space for better conversations, and she believes now is a good time to nuance and deepen our dialogue, as we also broaden it to include the diversity of stakeholders and a wider range of perspectives.
