Innovation and A.I. for a better information to citizens and more accurate EWS

Eurovisioni and WBU

Session 223

Monday, 7 July 2025 16:00–16:45 (UTC+02:00) Physical (on-site) and Virtual (remote) participation Room L, Palexpo Emerging Technologies Interactive Session 3 Documents

Disasters provoked by climate change will be more numerous, bigger in intensity and in their impact. In order to save lives, will be crucial to improve the quality and the accuracy of Early Warning systems on one side, and the capacity to convey these life-saving information in a timely and safe manner to the concerned population, especially the more vulnerable. This is a goal for the EW4All action plan of the United Nations (that plan to install within 2027 multi-hazards Early Warning systems in countries that currently have not such systems), but is also an endeavor for the media, especially the broadcasting media, that are the ones that could reach the most of the population, especially the unconnected.

The adoption of A.I. technologies within the EWS is allowing these alerts to be more accurate, more precise and detailed, more anticipatory then before. But the problem of the "last mile" remains crucial, in areas where only a minority is connected and the majority (in rural areas, the poorer, the illiterate, the elders....) are only relying on traditional media.

So it´s essential to be able to combine the new generation of more accurate forecasts and alerts, with resilient and robust infrastructures of broadcasting media.

To discuss of these issues is the scope of this workshop, to which will participate:

Antonio Arcidiacono, director of Technology and Innovation at EBU (European Broadcasting Union)

Brigitte Perrin, leading strategic communication at WMO

Natalia Ilieva, global coordinator of the project Media saving Lives, promoted by WBU through ABU (Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union), AUB (African Union of Broadcasting), CBU (Caribbean Broadcasting Union) and ASBU (Arab States Broadcasting Union).
