Futurizing Democracy. Threats and Opportunities in the Digital Age

World Summit Awards

Session 204

Tuesday, 8 July 2025 10:00–10:45 (UTC+02:00) Physical (on-site) and Virtual (remote) participation Room L, Palexpo Interactive Session 1 Document

Our democracies are facing unprecedented digital pressure. As AI evolves rapidly and the digital public sphere becomes increasingly weaponized, core democratic principles such as trust, participation, and the rule of law are being tested.

From disinformation campaigns and fake news to coordinated bot activity, hate speech, and digital sabotage – malicious online dynamics are eroding civil discourse and polarizing societies. At the same time, digital tools hold the potential to revitalize democratic engagement, enable transparency, and empower civic voices.

This interactive workshop invites participants to explore both the threats and the opportunities posed by digital technologies to democracy. Building on insights from the WSA Global Congress 2025 in Hyderabad, we will discuss:

  • How can societies defend against algorithmic manipulation and cyberattacks?
  • What role do fake news and hate speech play in undermining public trust?
  • Where can digital innovation strengthen democratic participation and resilience?

Join us for a dynamic, interactive session that aims not only to raise awareness but also to shape concrete ideas for future action.
