Summary:
|
The mass-market deployment of NFC-based authentication faces an intractable economic dichotomy: high-assurance secure elements and physical unclonable functions are too costly for FMCG and IoT scale deployments, while low-cost commodity tags lack cryptographic coprocessors and are vulnerable to cloning. This Recommendation standardizes the anti-cloning architecture, which resolves this dichotomy by binding an off-chip Ed25519 digital signature to the immutable, factory-programmed hardware UID of an [ISO/IEC 14443-3] tag. The result is a vendor-neutral, decentralized anti-cloning mechanism that achieves 128-bit security strength on sub-$0.06 commodity hardware, enabling fully offline verification by any compliant reading client without centralized key escrow or proprietary backend services.
