Work item: X.nfc-sba
Subject/title: Anti-cloning protocol: Vendor-neutral asymmetric cryptographic framework for hardware-bound near field communication (NFC) identity
Status: Under study
Approval process: AAP
Type of work item: Recommendation
Version: New
Equivalent number: -
Timing: 2028-06 (Medium priority)
Liaison: ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 17, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27, NFC Forum, IETF, ITU-T SG20
Supporting members: Cifr.io, NICT, Denmark
Summary: The mass-market deployment of NFC-based authentication faces an intractable economic dichotomy: high-assurance secure elements and physical unclonable functions are too costly for FMCG and IoT scale deployments, while low-cost commodity tags lack cryptographic coprocessors and are vulnerable to cloning. This Recommendation standardizes the anti-cloning architecture, which resolves this dichotomy by binding an off-chip Ed25519 digital signature to the immutable, factory-programmed hardware UID of an [ISO/IEC 14443-3] tag. The result is a vendor-neutral, decentralized anti-cloning mechanism that achieves 128-bit security strength on sub-$0.06 commodity hardware, enabling fully offline verification by any compliant reading client without centralized key escrow or proprietary backend services.
