Summary:
|
IMT-2020 networks and beyond enable service scenarios such as immersive communication and real-time high-resolution games by integrating more dimensional elements such as communication, sensing, computing, data, and intelligence. These services require ultra-low latency and high bandwidth. However, the traditional pipeline transmission and centralized external computing mode has been difficult to meet the extreme latency requirement, and massive concurrent service traffic has also caused great transmission pressure to the data center. More communication resources and computation resources closer to users are urgently required to offload and compute the service traffic on-path.
In the aspect of feasibility, with the development of programmable network technology [ITU-T Y.3152] and software-defined networking (SDN), in-network computing technology with distributed processing ability and high computing efficiency is booming. At the same time, network softwarization in [ITU-T Y.3150] can realize virtualized UPF, which makes it possible for IMT-2020 networks and beyond to support user plane computing (UPC) on demand. UPC is a feature can endogenously process the computing service traffic with on-path processing requirements carried on the user plane. By using of UPC, the end-to-end service quality can be better guaranteed in a closed-loop manner inside the IMT-2020 networks.
In order to meet these requirements, it is necessary to study the new requirements and the related functional enhancement to support user plane computing in IMT-2020 networks and beyond.
