Summary:
|
A maritime telehealth system is a healthcare platform designed to deliver healthcare and medical services to seafarers and passengers aboard ships, often operating in remote and resource-constrained environments. It leverages modern communication technologies, medical devices, and digital healthcare tools to bridge the gap between ship crews and onshore medical facilities. This system is critical for ensuring the health and safety of maritime workers who face unique challenges due to isolation, limited medical infrastructure, and harsh environmental conditions. Maritime operations are inherently international, with ships traversing territorial waters and international waters while crew members hail from diverse countries. In such settings, a maritime telehealth system plays a vital role in addressing the challenges of providing equitable, timely, and effective healthcare. Maritime telehealth system has emerged as a critical tool for providing healthcare services to seafarers and other individuals in maritime emergency situations. However, the effective implementation of maritime telemedicine requires addressing the challenges of interoperability and accessibility. This is why an international standard for maritime telehealth systems is essential.
