Work item: K.Suppl.12 to ITU-T K.51 (ex Suppl.to K.51)
Subject/title: Narrow pin spacing in connectors potential hazards
Status: Agreed on 2018-05-25
Approval process: Agreement
Type of work item: Supplement
Version: New
Equivalent number: -
Timing: -
Liaison: TC 108, UL
Supporting members: Bourns Limited, Adtran
Summary: This supplement addresses narrow pin spacing in connectors with limited creepage and clearance dimensions but high-power loading, which can potentially make them susceptible to high impedance shorts between connector pins or arcing during the connecting/disconnecting mating cycle. These shorts and arcs can result in thermal and fire hazards for such high-power connectors and negatively impact overall system reliability.
Comment: Scope: Small form factor connectors have very limited creepage and clearance dimensions that can potentially make them susceptible to high impedance shorts between pins of the connector.
