Key Insights

The development and implementation of National Emergency Telecommunication Plans (NETPs) were supported for Cabo Verde, Comoros, Djibouti, Fiji, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Libya, Malawi, Mauritania, Namibia, Rwanda, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

As lead of Pillar 3, on “Warning Dissemination and Communication” of the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative:

  • A preliminary assessment on early warning systems was conducted for Botswana, Comoros, Malawi, Rwanda, Seychelles, and Zambia.
  • Somalia was supported in the technical, economic and regulatory analysis for the implementation of a Mobile Early Warning System based on Cell Broadcast.
  • EW4All roll-out workshops took place in Comoros, Djibouti, Fiji, Ghana, Liberia, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles, South Africa, and Sudan.

The pre-positioning of satellite equipment was completed to provide a faster response to Member States in the wake of disasters. The equipment helps countries restore broken communication links to coordinate and respond quickly to affected communities. The satellite equipment has been pre-positioned in: 

  • Zimbabwe, to support the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States.
  • Barbados, to support the Caribbean countries and the Americas region. 
  • United Arab Emirates, to support countries in the Africa, Arab and Asia-Pacifc regions.

In July, satellite equipment was deployed to Grenada, Jamaica, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines to provide support to the countries after the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl.
