Grissie Fred
Grissie Fred is a primary school teacher from one of the Smart Island Communities in South Malekula, Vanuatu, with over twenty-four years of experience in education and community leadership. Living in one of the country’s most remote areas, she has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of digital connectivity, through her engagement in ITU’s Smart Villages and Smart Islands Initiative.
Only a few years ago, cargo ships visited her area once every few months, and residents faced dangerous and costly journeys to access banking and essential services. Today, thanks to improved digital infrastructure, cargo ships arrive weekly, and online transactions have replaced long-distance travel.
Recognizing the potential of digital learning, Grissie is now leading efforts to promote online education and digital transformation across her community. She envisions a future where teachers, students, and families in Vanuatu’s remote areas can harness technology to enhance education, economic opportunity, and community wellbeing.

With deep pride in her roots, Grissie warmly welcomes visitors to Vanuatu’s Smart Island communities, examples of how digital inclusion can transform even the most remote places into connected, thriving societies.
I’ve been motivated that it is not too late for me and other colleagues of the same age as myself, for us to seek trainings, to use digital devices, to continue to help us in our teaching profession.
