Following the trend of worldwide celebrations of the Girls in ICT Day around the world, the United Nations Students Association of Ghana Technology University College (UNSA-GTUC) held their second edition of the Girls In ICT Day Event on the 22nd of May 2014 with a theme, "Unleashing IT in Girls" where "IT" plays a double role of being the conventional meaning of "it" indicating a specific point of view, and the acronym for "Information Technology" at the same time.

The event was held on the university's main campus Tesano, Accra at the renowned Florence Onny Auditorium. It hosted fifteen (15) girls from each of the six (6) selected senior High Schools in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, totaling 90 girls, and three distinguished women who are excelling in the field of technology. They are Mrs Nana Yaa Owusu Prempeh of Tinaifa Ghana, Miss Dorathy Elorm a Google Student Ambassador at GIJ, Diana Sackatey an App developer. Key amongst the speakers was the Vice President of the Ghana Technology University College, Dr. Robert Baffour Awuah. He encouraged the students to see ICT and engineering as a field that they can excel even more than their male counterpart. He was of the view that suppose women were in charge of this planet, it would have been a world of fun where tranquility will prevail.

The president of UNSA-GTUC Miss Abdulrazaq Fadila Ahmad gave a brief welcome address and thanked everyone especially the speakers for their time. She emphasized on the need to unleash IT in girls and buttressed on the various opportunities girls have in the ICT field.

Mrs Nana Yaa Owusu Prempeh also encouraged the girls. Her emphasis was on the 3D's theory she applies in her career. The 3D's stand for Determination, Discipline and Diligence. She said information is knowledge, knowledge is power and power builds confidence. Her last words were we should bring a lot of light in our life and our darkness will vanish.

The second part of the event gave the participants an opportunity to tour the campus of the Ghana Technology University College. They had the opportunity to visit the ICT and Engineering Labs on campus, and were given the opportunity to have a practical feel of the equipment in the labs. The library was one point of attraction where the girls were exposed to the books and literature that could make their studies in ICT and Engineering not only exciting but fulfilling.

Finally, the participating schools: Accra Girls Senior High School, Accra Wesley Girls Senior High School, Ghana Lebanon Islamic Senior High School, Haavad Senior High School, Labone Senior High School and St Mary's High School took part in a quiz competition. Two students were selected from each school to represent their respective schools in the competition. In the first and second rounds of the competition, the students were quizzed on basic ICT questions and computer studies. The final round of the competition tested their knowledge on typing skills and the use of the internet. The emerging winners were the students from Ghana Lebanon Islamic Senior High School; the second and third place went to St Mary's High School and Labone Senior High School respectively.

Prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners and participating schools. Proud sponsors of the event were the Ghana Technology University College, EPP Books and Google Students Ambassadors Program.

The president, Miss Abdulrazaq Fadila Ahmad gave the closing remarks and thanked all participants, executives and volunteers for their relentless effort and time.
