BWIT and UCEP celebrate Girls in ICT Day 2013

International Girls' in ICT Day is an initiative backed by International Telecommunications Union, (ITU) 193 Member States, to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs). International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in April every year.

 To help inspire girls to consider a future in technology, ITU established 'Girls in ICT Day' in 2010. It supports the global organization of activities every year. "Girls in ICT Day" is growing with over 100 countries likely to hold events hosted by governments, private sector and NGOs this year.

Bangladesh Women in Technology BWIT and UCEP celebrated Girls in ICT Day in Bangladesh with Luna Shamsuddoha, President BWIT in the Chair.  The event was held at UCEP , Mirpur Technical School, on 25 April 2013 with the participation of girl student.  IT Journalists and IT entrepreneurs, IT professionals and Donor agency attended the event. The other speakers were Brig Gen. Aftab Uddin Ahmad (Retd.),  Executive Director, UCEP-Bangladesh; Claudia A. Page, Public Diplomacy Officer, The American Center; Mohammad Kawsar –President and members of Bangladesh ICT Journalist Forum (BIJF); members of BWIT -  IT Women Entrepreneurs and Professionals also spoke on the occasion.

ITU has recognized Bangladesh and its efforts for Girls and women in ICT. BWIT has received particular attention from ITU HQ. The work of UCEP and the participation of girls came to light through BWIT advocacy. It may be mentioned that UCEP was visited by a delegation headed by Mr.Houlin Zhao, ITU Deputy Secretary-General and Chairman, BTRC last year and the progress of girls in IT from Bangladesh received worldwide attention. In the context of the inspirational work, the "Girls in ICT Day" event was held at UCEP by BWIT this year.
