ABOUT UNSA-GTUC

The United Nations Students Association of Ghana Technology University College is an inter -facular student association, which aims to engage the students of GTUC in an interactive and critical evaluation of the United Nations structure, method of work, and its position in the world. It provides the perfect platform for students to realize the numerous opportunities that the UN has to offer and how important the ideas and activities of the youth can positively affect society and the world at large.

UNSA-GIRLS IN ICT DAY 2013

Following the trend of worldwide celebrations of the Girls in ICT Day around the world, the United Nations Students Association of Ghana Technology University College (UNSA-GTUC) held their maiden edition of the Girls In ICT Day Event on the 23rd of May 2013 with a challenging theme, "Girls can do IT; YES THEY CAN" where "IT" plays a double role of being the conventional meaning of "it" indicating a specific point of view, and the acronym for "Information Technology" at the same time.

The event was held on the university's main campus Tesano, Accra at the renowned Eva Von Hirsh Auditorium. It hosted ten (10) girls from ten (10) selected senior High Schools in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, and three of Ghana's top women who have excelled in the field of Information Communications Technology and Engineering. (Ms. Eva Lokko, Ms. Shiela Bartels – Sam and Ing. Yaa Boadi Aboagye) Key amongst the speakers was the Vice President of the Ghana Technology University College; Dr. Robert Baffour Awuah was the Keynote Speaker for the event. He encouraged the students to think in a different way to change the status quo. He was of the view that suppose women were in charge of this planet, it would have been a world of fun where tranquillity will prevail.

The Dean of Informatics at the Ghana Technology University College; Dr. Franklin Asamoah Baah also presented insights on careers in the ICT field and showed ways that the young girls could take advantage of the numerous opportunities ICT have to offer. The president of the United Nations Students Association, Master Attrams Siaw Prince also addressed the audience by emphasizing that Girls Can Do ICT and that there are numerous advantages in the field.

The second part of the event gave the participants an opportunity to tour the beautiful campus of the Ghana Technology University College. They had the opportunity to visit the ICT and Engineering Labs on campus, and were given the opportunity to have a practical feel of the equipment in the labs. The library was one point of attraction where the girls were exposed to the books and literature that could make their studies in ICT and Engineering not only exciting but fulfilling.

Finally, the participating schools: Labone Senior High School, City Business School, Haavad Senior High School, Accra Girls Senior High School, Ghana Lebanon Islamic Senior High School, O'reilly Senior High School, and Accra Wesley Girls Senior High School took part in a quiz competition. Two students were selected from each school to represent their respective schools in the competition. In the first and second rounds of the competition, the students were quizzed on basic ICT questions and computer studies. The final round of the competition tested their knowledge on typing skills and the use of the internet. The competitors were asked to type a short message and send it to a specific email address. The emerging winners were the students from Labone Senior High School; the second and third place went to Accra Girls Senior High School and O'rielly Senior High School respectively.

Prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners and participating schools. Proud sponsors of the event were the ITU, Google Ghana, Blueskies, Epp Books and Services, and Morgan Elorm Pixels.​
