The Information Technology Association of The Gambia Basse Chapter celebrated Girls in ICT Day on the 26th May, 2012 in Tambasansang Village in Tumana District Upper River Region.

In The Gambia especially URR, Girls in ICT Day was celebrated in a form of gathering where Girls from Lower Basic School including Parents and Youth Association under the Auspices of ITAG, Basse Chapter were involved.

In his welcoming remarks Mr. Ebrima Susso the Head Teacher of Tambasansang Lower Basic School thanked ITU for the initiative and express gratitude to
Information Technology Association of The Gambia Basse Chapter for chosing his school in observance of this day. Mr. Suso encouraged parents and students especially girls to pursue IT related courses.

Delivering his keynote Address Mr. Modou Sawaneh the Business Liaison Officer for ITAG Basse Chapter informed the gathering how this day was initiated and purpose of it which he said is in line with ITAG's aim and objectives. He thanked ITAG Basse Chapter's Partners and Donors and particularly The Children and Community Initiative for Development and Tostan International The Gambia for the immense contributions towards the programme.

Other speakers included Mr. Ebrima Manneh from Tambasansang Youth Association. He spoke on the importance of Girls Education. He stated that, Girls education is a priority issues in the Gambia and that, the Government has laid all the necessary foundations and programmes to ensure that, girls are enroll and retained in school.

For his part, Mr. Kawsu Sillah, the Corporate Affairs Officer for ITAG Basse Chapter dilated on the relevance of involvement of Girls in ICT as wells as the benefit of acquiring skills in ICTs. He spoke of some of the Project and activities that ITAG Basse Chapter plans to embark on for Girls in the rural areas of the Gambia. He called on all to support the programmes and activities of ITAG- Basse Chapter in advancing ICT for all especially girls.

As part of activities marking the day, the celebration ended with a football match between Tambasansang and Dampha Kunda football clubs that was attended by a cross section of people from the two communities.
