ITU-T J.224建议书详细说明了第五代高速电缆传输数据系统。第五代传输系统在以往ITU-T建议书（即ITU-T J.112、ITU-T J.122、ITU-T J.222.x系列和ITU-T J.223.x系列）的基础上引入了许多新功能。ITU-T J.224建议书包括物理（PHY）层的主要新功能，并建立了全双工电缆传输数据服务接口规范（DOCSIS）操作模式，包括增强介质访问控制（MAC）层协议，以及对上层协议的要求，例如互联网协议（IP）和动态主机配置协议（DHCP）。第五代电缆调制解调器的规范完全合并了第四代的规范。注 – 为便于使用，ITU-T J.224建议书的结构和内容是在国际电联根据ITU-T A.5建议书认可CableLabs的基础上，通过直接引用原始源资料整理而成。
