En la Recomendación UIT-T J.224 se especifica la quinta generación de sistemas de transmisión de datos de alta velocidad por cable. Los sistemas de transmisión de la quinta generación presentan varias características nuevas que se basan en Recomendaciones UIT-T anteriores, entre ellas, las Recomendaciones UIT-T J.112 y UIT-T J.122, y las series de Recomendaciones UIT-T J.222.x y UIT-T J.223.x. La Recomendación UIT-T J.224 incluye nuevas características fundamentales para la capa física (PHY) y establece un modo de funcionamiento de la especificación de interfaz de servicio de datos por cable (DOCSIS) totalmente dúplex, e incluye mejoras en los protocolos de la capa de control de acceso al medio (MAC), así como requisitos para los de la capa superior, por ejemplo, el protocolo de Internet (IP) y el protocolo de configuración dinámica de anfitrión (DHCP).
