La Recomendación UIT-T J.225 define la cuarta generación de sistemas de transmisión de datos por cable de alta velocidad. Los sistemas de transmisión de cuarta generación introducen una serie de nuevas características que se basan en las anteriores Recomendaciones UIT-T J.112, UIT-T J.122 y series de Recomendaciones UIT-T J.222.x y UIT-T J.223.x. Esta Recomendación incluye nuevas características fundamentales para la capa física (PHY) y mejoras en los protocolos de la capa de control de acceso al medio (MAC), así como requisitos para los protocolos de la capa superior, como el protocolo de Internet (IP), el protocolo de configuración dinámica de anfitrión (DHCP), etc. Las especificaciones del módem por cable de cuarta generación se incorporan íntegramente en esta Recomendación. El Suplemento Informativo 10 de las Recomendaciones UIT-T de la serie J contiene la relación de correspondencia entre las versiones DOCSIS y las revisiones y generaciones de las Recomendaciones UIT-T.
