نظرة عامة على شبكات الجيل التالي

ابتكرت شبكات الجيل التالي لتكون تنفيذاً ملموساً للبنية التحتية العالمية للمعلومات (GII) وذلك بالنظر إلى الحقائق الجديدة في السوق والتي تتسم بعوامل من قبيل: المنافسة المفتوحة بين المشغلين بسبب إزالة القيود عن الأسواق والتوسع الهائل في الحركة الرقمية، والذي يرجع مثلاً إلى زيادة استعمال "الإنترنت" وزيادة الطلب على خدمات الوسائط المتعددة الجديدة وزيادة الطلب على التنقلية العامة وتقارب الشبكات والخدمات إلخ. ويرد أساس شبكات الجيل التالي في توصيات السلسلة Y. ولكن البنية التحتية العالمية للمعلومات لا تتطرق بقدر كاف إلى مسائل التنفيذ. ونتيجة لذلك ينبغي أن تُفهم شبكات الجيل التالي بوصفها خطوة أخرى في تحقيق مفهوم البنية التحتية العالمية للمعلومات.
والهدف من شبكات الجيل التالي هو أن تضمن أن جميع العناصر المطلوبة للتشغيل البيني وقدرات الشبكات تدعم التطبيقات عالمياً عبر شبكات الجيل التالي مع الاحتفاظ بمفهوم الفصل بين النقل والخدمات والتطبيقات.
ويُقصد بهذه التوصية أن تستعمل بوصفها معلومات أساسية تساعد في صياغة التوصيات والمعايير والخطوط التوجيهية للتنفيذ من أجل إقامة شبكات الجيل التالي.
