تضع التوصية ITU-T L.1040 المبادئ التوجيهية والمتطلبات لبائعي معدات تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات الأصلية الذين يقدمون معدات للمركبات ذاتية القيادة بهدف الحد من كمية المخلفات الإلكترونية المستقبلية. وتحلل التوصية ITU-T L.1040 مخاطر المخلفات الإلكترونية ومؤشرات إمكانية الاستدامة الأخرى للمركبات ذاتية القيادة وتقترح كيفية التخفيف من حدة هذه التحديات المحتملة. وتستعمل التوصية ITU-T L.1040 المعلومات المجمعة من أصحاب المصلحة التي يمكن أن تقدم أفكاراً سديدة بشأن التحديات المحتملة المحددة.
