توصِّف التوصية ITU-T J.224 الجيل الخامس من أنظمة نقل البيانات عالية السرعة عبر الكبلات. وتدخل هذه الأنظمة عدداً من الخواص الجديدة القائمة على ما كان موجوداً في توصيات سابقة لقطاع تقييس الاتصالات وتحديداً سلاسل التوصيات ITU-T J.112 وITU-T J.122 وITU-T J.222.x وITU-T J.223.x. وتشمل التوصية ITU-T J.224 سمات جديدة رئيسية للطبقة المادية (PHY) وتضع مواصفة (DOCSIS) كاملة بأسلوب التشغيل بالإرسال المزدوج، بما في ذلك تحسينات لبروتوكولات طبقة التحكم في النفاذ إلى الوسائط (MAC) إضافةً إلى متطلبات من أجل بروتوكولات الطبقة الأعلى مثل بروتوكول الإنترنت وبروتوكول تشكيلة المضيف الدينامية (DHCP) وما إلى ذلك. وتضم مواصفات المودمات الكبلية من الجيل الخامس جميع مواصفات الجيل الرابع.
