WTIM 2012 - Side events

ITU Data Dissemination Tools

Date: 26 September 2012
Time: 13:30-14:00
Venue: WTIM meeting room

The presentation will showcase two of ITU’s main ICT data dissemination tools : a) World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Database (WTID) and b) the ICT Eye.

First, the World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Database, including key indicators and basic functionalities, will be presented. Then, the new interface and functionalities of the ICT Eye will be introduced.  The ICT Eye is a one stop-shop for ICT information that provides telecommunication/ICT indicators and statistics, as well as regulatory and tariff policy profiles. It also integrates the Google Public Data Explorer (PDE) platform which enables quick search of ICT statistics, and helps users quickly interpret data and statistics through rich visualizations. The new dissemination platform will also include dynamic data extraction allowing users to select indicators for countries and years, and export it to other formats. The data included are collected from countries through the annual questionnaires of the ITU.

ICT measurements in Egypt – Data availability and dissemination

Date: 27 September 2012
Time: 13:30-14:00
Venue: WTIM meeting room

This side event will highlight Egypt’s experience with its “ICT Indicators Initiative”, as an example of a knowledge management experience. Egypt’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) has led this initiative to overcome a number of challenges related to the availability of reliable ICT indicators. This includes the development of ICT statistics through completion and verification of all missing and incomplete data, in addition to disseminating this data to the public and all interested parties.

First, the “ICT Indicators Initiative” and the launch of “Egypt’s ICT Indicators Portal” in 2008 will be presented followed by an overview of the different types of data that MCIT gathers from its partners as well as the process related.

We will also tackle the different techniques pertaining to data quality assurance and the software used for data storage. A focus is put on primary data – from the data processing stage to the dissemination stage on “Egypt ICT indicators portal” including all the IT systems used in these processes.

Finally, we will provide a snapshot of the components of the portal, the frequency of data updates and techniques used for getting users’ feedback.
