ITU Asia-Pacific Regional Development Forum

The International Telecommunication Union organised the ITU Asia-Pacific Regional Development Forum (RDF) 2012 on 16-18 May 2012, in Bangkok, Thailand. The Forum was organized in close collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP), and hosted by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), Government of Kingdom of Thailand with the support of the Department of Broadband, Communications, and the Digital Economy (DBCDE), Australian Government.

The Forum attracted some 140 participants from 24 countries, 18 international/regional/sub-regional organisations, 5 Embassies/Ambassadors and 16 private sectors, R&D institutes, NGOs, and academia of which among them were senior management of Member States, Sector and Associate Members, and Development Partners.

The Forum provided a platform where decision-makers of ITU Member States, Sector Members, and various partners met, reviewed, discussed and recommended the priority areas of telecommunication/ICT development programs and initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region for the objectives such as: e.g.,

  • provide a platform for dialogues among policy makers, regulators, industry, and international and regional development agencies in the telecommunication/ICT sectors;
  • recommend ideas and proposals aimed at addressing key telecommunication/ICT development issues of the Asia-Pacific region for the ITU State Members, Sector and Associate Members;
  • strengthen and enhance partnerships with all stakeholders in implementing Asia-Pacific regional initiatives and projects for the priority areas.

Taking the opportunity of this Forum, ITU, UN-ESCAP, and the Ministry of ICT Thailand also organised a ceremony to celebrate the “World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2012” with its theme of “Women and Girls in ICT” on 17 May 2012 (click here for the Programme). An Exhibition of e-Women will be also organized by the Ministry of ICT Thailand throughout the Forum.

The Forum was open to both ITU and ESCAP membership, while the Exhibition was open to the public.
