WIS 2.0 the WMO global data sharing framework
The WMO Information System 2.0 (WIS 2.0) is the global system that connects national weather services and lets them share data freely and in real time. As climate and weather hazards put more lives and livelihoods at risk, openly shared, AI-ready data is the single most important enabler of better forecasts, early warnings and adaptation. Global data sharing rests on four pillars:
Open Data (WMO Unified Data Policy) — enables the free and unrestricted international sharing of weather, climate and water data.
Open Standards (WIS 2.0) — operational since 2025 and now running on more than 100 nodes worldwide, it implements the Unified Data Policy as a global service that shares data in real time and makes it interoperable and ready for AI.
Open Source (wis2box) — lowers the entry barrier so dramatically that every country, including LDCs and SIDS, can take part in hours rather than months.
Capacity Development — a global education and training programme, designed to ensure no Member is left behind, has reached 90 Members across all six WMO Regions.
Together these pillars give the world a distributed, AI-ready data infrastructure that feeds both traditional and AI-driven forecasting and underpins Early Warnings for All.
