AI for faster and better targeted humanitarian response
UN Global Pulse, the Secretary-General’s Innovation Lab
Session 147
Joint talk by DISHA and Google Research
This joint talk presented by UN Global Pulse, the Secretary-General's Innovation Lab, and Google Research will highlight DISHA, a leading example of a multi-sector collaboration of partners matching AI capabilities to humanitarian and development needs at scale. DISHA (Data Insights for Social and Humanitarian Action) brings together humanitarian organizations, technology companies, data providers, philanthropic and delivery partners. Working side-by-side, they ensure the latest AI advances become available to humanitarian first responders in the form of reliable, validated products which stand ready to be used whenever disaster strikes.
The talk will feature walk-throughs of DISHA's solutions and AI models that underpin them. In particular, we will highlight solutions that identify settlement structures in high-resolution satellite imagery and assess damage to infrastructure after natural disasters. We will illustrate how advanced AI models from Google Research have enabled faster production of assessments necessary to inform disaster response and recovery, as well as expansion of assessed area coverage.
