The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN Human Rights)

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the principal UN entity dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights for all. Under its mandate from the UN General Assembly, OHCHR plays a vital role in upholding the UN's three fundamental pillars: peace and security, development, and human rights. Our organization actively explores AI's implications for privacy, freedom of expression, and discrimination, but also the right to health, education and cultural rights, advocating for a human rights-based approach throughout the AI lifecycle. Through our work on human rights compliant law- and policy-making, on safe online environments for critical voices and initiatives like the B-Tech project, reports and its engagement in policy dialogues, OHCHR seeks to align AI and other emerging technologies with human rights principles, ensuring that AI systems benefit humanity without causing harm.
