Introduction

The Global Forum on Cyber Expertise (GFCE) is an international platform for multistakeholders which aims to identify successful policies, practices and ideas on cyber capacity building and multiply these on a global level. The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2018 represents the world's largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development’ community. The annual WSIS Forum is a global multi-stakeholder platform facilitating the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines for advancing sustainable development. Capacity building is one of the key topics. Therefore, the WSIS Forum 2018 provides an excellent opportunity for the GFCE to exchange information and views on one of the key topics of cyber capacity building: internet standards.

Background and Rationale

The workshop will be on the topic of Internet standards in line with the GFCE Internet Infrastructure Initiative. A robust, open and resilient internet infrastructure is key to counter infringements and threats to the cyber domain. An up-to-date internet infrastructure diminishes the chances and impact of cyber attacks (like DDoS) and  cybercrime (hacking malware, phishing, botnets) and SPAM. Moreover a robust internet leads to more confidence and trust; increases the use of the internet and by consequence boosts innovative and economic activities. Hence, a proper internet infrastructure is a pre-requisite for sustainable economic growth and reaping social benefits of the internet.

Objective

The overall goal of the workshop is to inform the WSIS participants about the importance of internet standards as well as to underline the importance of international cooperation on cyber capacity building (e.g. the GFCE) and sharing good practices and guidelines.

Methodology

The workshop format will be a panel with various types of stakeholders with different expertise / experience on the topic of Internet Standards. During the 1,5 hour session, the panelists will have the opportunity to present their view on the topic. The last 30 minutes of the session will be reserved for questions from the audience.
