Title | Child Online Protection (COP) for Asia-Pacific | |
Description |
The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) networks, devices and services are increasingly critical for day-to-day life. In 2018, almost half the world is estimated to use the Internet (3.9 billion users). Also, according to one estimate, there will be over 12 billion machine-to-machine devices connected to the Internet by 2020. The number of Asia-Pacific children who possess mobile phones is constantly increasing. Just as in the real world, the cyber world exposes the users to a variety of security threats that can cause immense damage, and more so when it targets children. The increasingly widespread use of online content by children, at times with no control or guidance, enhances their vulnerability to cyberbullying, access to child pornography and other inappropriate content. It is important to work together to reduce the risks of the digital revolution and build confidence in the use of ICTs. Despite efforts from the Asia-Pacific Countries and international community, a number of challenges are yet to be addressed consistently across the region, either partially or fully in respect of child online protection. The project “Child Online Protection (COP) for Asia-Pacific” aims to strengthen COP in Asia-Pacific region. It follows from the earlier work done by ITU, Member countries and other development agencies and specifically aims to: 1. Strengthen, and where applicable, support development of draft national frameworks or identify priority components within a national framework for Child Online Protection; 2. Support with capacity building of relevant skills required to strengthen online safety for children in the context of the ITUs focus areas; and 3. Enhance cooperation amongst COP stakeholders. |
