| Title | Green GovStack: Accelerating sustainable government services digitalization and digital transformation | |
| Description |
The objectives of the project are to make partner governments (to be selected based on interest and commitment expressed): 1. Becoming digital frontrunners in enabling green paperless, presence-less and cashless services which will maximize their positive environmental and climate impact; 2. Using greener technologies particularly adopting hardware circular economy models, climate-neutral CPUs/Servers and Data Centres and, energy-efficient software development; 3. Providing guidance in setting smart Policy and Regulatory frameworks to be a driver for sustainable digitalization that adopt the use of circular economy models and innovate in greener technologies. | Achievements |
The project supported governments in advancing sustainable digital transformation through the adoption of environmentally responsible digital government approaches. It promoted the development of paperless, presence-less and cashless public services while encouraging the use of greener technologies, circular economy principles and sustainable ICT practices in government digitalization efforts. The project strengthened the GovStack ecosystem through the development and integration of key Digital Public Goods (DPGs) and reusable software components, including solutions for digital identity, consent management, interoperability, financial services and health-related applications. These components were deployed in the GovStack Sandbox, providing practical resources that governments could use to support sustainable digital government implementation. Capacity building and technical assistance activities supported countries across Africa, the Arab region, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Latin America and the Caribbean in learning about digital government architecture and service design. Through workshops, missions, regional forums and knowledge-sharing events, governments strengthened their understanding of sustainable digitalization models and Digital Public Goods-based approaches to service delivery. The project also developed practical guidance and policy resources to help governments adopt greener technologies and more sustainable ICT management practices. Key outputs included guidance on green ICT procurement, sustainable public procurement, green data centres and circular economy approaches for digital government systems. These resources helped countries integrate sustainability considerations into procurement processes and digital transformation strategies. The project contributed to strengthening the policy environment for sustainable digitalization through the promotion of environmentally responsible digital government practices, including support for e-waste policy development and regional policy dialogue. By combining Digital Public Goods, capacity development, practical guidance and policy support, the initiative helped position sustainability as a core element of digital government transformation.
