Mexico to host leading ITU statistics symposium
Top speakers from around the world will debate power of information and
communication technology as catalyst for development
Geneva, 18
November, 2013 – Mexico
City is set to host a major ITU conference that will welcome leading global
experts on economic development and government policy to discuss strategies to
leverage the transformational power of information and communication
technologies (ICTs) to drive socio-economic development.
Co-hosted by
ITU,
the UN specialized agency for ICT, and the Federal Telecommunications Institute
(IFT), Mexico’s new ICT market regulator, the
World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium
(WTIS) comes at a timely juncture for Mexico, which is currently undertaking a
radical reshaping of its own ICT market.
The event is expected to attract some 300 invited global experts and analysts in
areas spanning data and statistics, policy-making, and ICT-for-development
initiatives that harness the unique power of technology to bring essential
services like healthcare and education within reach of underserved and isolated
communities.
In today’s interconnected economy, accurate data on ICT penetration, pricing and
access are widely acknowledged to be critical, not just to the ICT sector, but
to the growth of other business and social sectors. ITU publishes the world’s
most widely-used global ICT database, as well as the annual flagship report,
Measuring the Information Society.
The WTIS will open with three High-Level Debates around key priorities for the
post-MDG global agenda, and the increasingly vital role of ICT statistics in
defining and monitoring national, regional and global development targets.
Confirmed speakers include Mexico’s Secretary for Communications and Transport,
Gerardo Ruiz Esparza; President of IFT, Gabriel Contreras Saldívar;
Professor Jeffrey
Sachs
(Earth Institute, Columbia University & Millennium Villages project);
Carlos
Slim Helú
(Fundación Carlos Slim); ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun I. Touré, and many
others.
Journalists are encouraged to register now to attend Day One of this
compelling international event. Please note that for security reasons advance
registration is essential to obtain a badge to enter the venue. Advance
