Summary: Exponential growth of communication devices has led to procurement of such devices from multiple sources, which has resulted in increase in vulnerabilities due to unknown device origins and possibilities of tampering throughout the device lifecycle. Information regarding origin of devices plays a critical role in ensuring the trustworthiness of devices in the telecommunication network. In order to address the challenges in life cycle management of communication devices, it is important to verify manufacturers, importers, and retailers; and track device information throughout its lifecycle. For this purpose, this technical report aims to study the challenges in life cycle management of communication devices for trustworthiness and analyses those challenges for addressing them. This study further identifies the stakeholders involved in the device life cycle and examines their roles. The report also defines the trusted life cycle and outlines the advantages of trusted life cycle management. Information required for trusted life cycle management of communication devices such as detailed technical information of devices, OEMs/importers, tracking of security updates, software/firmware changes, reported vulnerabilities and other related information etc. needs to be identified for analysis of trusted life cycle. Based on the above, this document produces the analysis results and the way forward.
