Les catastrophes liées aux inondations sont une question cruciale qui influe sur la sécurité d'une ville. On dénombre beaucoup de types de capacités de prise en charge des données pour la prévention des catastrophes liées aux inondations et l'atténuation de leurs effets. Toutefois, il serait extrêmement utile pour les villes de procéder à une évaluation complète de ces capacités.
On trouvera dans la Recommandation UIT-T Y.4911 un ensemble d'indicateurs fondamentaux de performance permettant d'évaluer les capacités de prise en charge des données fondée sur les technologies de l'information et de la communication pour la prévention des catastrophes liées aux inondations urbaines et l'atténuation de leurs effets.
