Los accidentes y catástrofes causados por los medios de transporte afectan a numerosas vidas y bienes. La seguridad del transporte puede verse influida por fallos en los medios de transporte (es decir, coches, trenes, barcos, etc.), por situaciones medioambientales (a saber, viento, nieve, hielo, etc.), por situaciones anormales de la infraestructura de transporte (es decir, puentes, túneles, carreteras, etc.) y por errores humanos de otro tipo.
