Buenas tardes a todas y todos,
Es para mí un placer darles la bienvenida al lanzamiento oficial de la Red de Mujeres para la CMDT en la región de las Américas.
Este evento es el último de los seis eventos organizados en el marco de las Reuniones Preparatorias Regionales de la Conferencia.
Al mismo tiempo, el evento es el primero de muchos más en la región dirigidos a impulsar el liderazgo de las mujeres en la labor del sector de desarrollo de la UIT.
Recuerdo bien el entusiasmo por el lanzamiento de la Red de Mujeres que se inició durante la Conferencia Mundial de Radiocomunicaciones de 2019, y me emociona ver cómo la red continúa y se amplía para cubrir el trabajo de la UIT.
Pronto escucharemos más sobre la experiencia de la red a través de Jennifer Manner, Copresidenta Regional de la CITEL para la Red de Mujeres para la CMR-23 (NOW4WRC23).
Dear Friends,
We know that women’s meaningful participation and leadership are absolutely essential to achieve a WTDC that goes down in history.
This is because women’s ideas are necessary to draw up an effective, revitalized connectivity agenda and come up with digital solutions that meet the development challenges of today.
Simply put, women’s perspectives need to be brought out more strongly to deliver on our promise to connect the unconnected.
This is one of the reasons why the Network of Women aims to empower women for larger responsibilities in their delegations.
We are going to work to improve the number of women taking up leadership roles in the structures that make up ITU-D, such as committee chairs, working group chairs and other management roles related to processes for WTDC-21 and future conferences.
The Network provides us the opportunity to exchange experiences with one another and gain a collective understanding of the difficulties that female delegates face, so that we can identify ways to overcome them.
At an individual level, it also helps to share challenges and experiences with someone who can relate, to feel a sense of togetherness as we get by day-to-day challenges.
Mentoring is another important aspect of the Network. Younger women can benefit from the insights and advice of more experienced professionals, and develop confidence in their own abilities. Sometimes, just listening to a motivating voice that tells you that you can do it, is all it takes.
Through this Network, we also hope to showcase the many talented women working in this field as inspiring role models for the next generation of ICT leaders.
I must acknowledge the Americas region for having set an example for the world, as it is the only region that has achieved a gender parity in terms of access and use to the internet.
I hope that we can mirror this in equal participation of women in the work of ITU-D as well as in the tech sector overall.
Looking back at women’s participation in the past RPMs, women represented only 26% of delegates to the 2013 RPM in Uruguay, and again 26% at the 2017 RPM in Paraguay. This year we are much, much closer to our goal of equal participation, as 44% of registered delegates to this RPM are female.
Estimadas amigas y amigos,
Estoy segura de que estaréis de acuerdo conmigo que la utilidad de esta Red va más allá de la conferencia de desarrollo.
Al fortalecer la participación de las mujeres en el trabajo del sector de desarrollo de la UIT estaremos creando un mayor espacio para una participación más activa de las mujeres en la toma de decisiones del sector de las TICs.
Precisamente la semana pasada celebramos la décima edición del evento Chicas en las TICs.
Esta iniciativa global ha sido clave para con-cien-ciar a toda la sociedad sobre la importancia de construir un sector TICs más inclusivo.
Espero que esta Red siga creciendo, expandiéndose y dando la bienvenida a más mujeres en el futuro.
Tengamos la constancia, la dedicación y el coraje para abrir más espacios para las mujeres para que todas tengan las oportunidades que se merecen.
Os deseo éxito en vuestro trabajo, y os ofrezco mi apoyo.
Contad conmigo para que rompamos las barreras que limitan el avance de las mujeres en nuestro sector.
