Girls in ICT

Eventos del Día internacional de las Niñas en las TIC 2015

Office of Electronic Communications

Łódź, Poland , 2015, April 23

The aim of the festival celebrated for the third time is to encourage girls and young women to build their career in the field of new technologies. The Girls in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Day celebrated almost all over the world is an initiative launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) of the United Nations. The Union is the first international organization that drew attention to the fact that the sector of new technologies is growing with extraordinary rapidity, yet stereotypically – with the vast superiority of men.

The conference under the theme “Women of Success in ICT” was organized as part of a social project Girls in New Technologies, which animates and actively supports the efforts directed at increasing women and girls’ involvement in the field of new technologies. Magdalena Gaj, the President of the Office of Electronic Communications, from the beginning of her term in office makes various efforts to encourage girls and women to build their education and career paths in the technology sector: - Several years ago, while working in the industry, I noticed that I met mostly men. On the other hand, I constantly heard that new places of work were created, that teams should be mixed. Hence the idea to initiate a social action that would show to the girls studying technical subjects that the indicated field is interesting and at the same time constitutes a good place of work – emphasizes the President of the Office of Electronic Communications.

This year's conference was accompanied by a panel discussion with the participation of representatives of the biggest companies such as: Cisco Systems Poland; SAS Institute; Sygnity; Motorola Solutions Polska; Microsoft Polska; Centre - TVP Technology; GTECH Polska; Aviva Polska; GFT and Huawei Polska. Panellists addressed the most important issues related to the role and place of women in the computer science and new technologies, arguing that the industry is an ideal place of work for them as well as the field for their personal development.

The conference was accompanied by free practical workshops conducted by professionals from the leading ICT companies – partners of the project:

  • New technologies that change television (Telewizja Polska)
  • 5G From Mobile Internet to Connected World (Huawei Polska)
