​Women In ICT - Kokopo & Computers And Internet Technology Services

Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, 2015, April 13

 

The First Ever Girls In ICT Day Event(s) took place in Kokopo, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea where 20 girls in Grade 10, Grade 11, Grade 12 participated in a 1-week program called #GirlsInICTechWeek during their 1-week School Term Break.

The girls covered topics 1 topic a day which covered Overview of ICT in Papua New Guinea, Courses Available, Women In ICT rep talks, Day 2: Hardware and a Hardware Site Visit to a local Hardware Supplier, Day 3: Programming and Software Development Concepts Day 4: Networking, Internet and WWW. Day 5 : Site Visits to 2 X Communication Companies and a ICT department of a public entity (Electricity).

It was a theory learning (grasping concepts of the topics) and then a hands-on practical and speaker sessions from those working in the industry in the various areas covered.

The TechWeek ended with presentation of Certificates of Participation and girls were given a project and evaluation forms to fill in.

To commemorate the actual day a ICT Expo was organised, inviting ICT companies big and small to come and set up their displays which was open to public and institutions. There were close to 200 students that showed up at the Expo and about 6 ICT companies set up, most of which were local, national and start-up ICT which allowed them to promote their services and products.

Videos of Women In ICT were also captured and shared on the day/week and pictures and videos of the girls in action also captured.

The girls completed the 1-week program and ICT expo with a more in-depth knowledge of ICT and concepts which were briefly touched on in their current ICT class at school.
