Summary: With the continuous development of videotelephony or videoconferencing services, in addition to basic audio, video and audiovisual communications, the multimedia functions and components are more abundant. Most videotelephony or videoconferencing services provide extended functions like screen sharing, background blurring or background replacement. Many of them also allow users to setup virtual avatar, or use AR interaction effects and other functions to increase the entertainment and efficiency of interactions. For videotelephony or videoconferencing services, the audio stream captured by microphone and the video stream captured by camera can be classified as mainstream multimedia. Extended functions like screen sharing and background replacement introduce substream multimedia from other sources or perform additional processing on mainstream multimedia. For the audio, video and audiovisual quality of non-interactive scenarios, a relatively complete and mature system has been formed during the past years. For interactive/conversational scenarios, existing Recommendations most focus on the quality of mainstream multimedia or specific aspects of multimedia communication. Considering the diversity of multimedia functions in nowadays’ videotelephony services and multiple influencing factors that affect user experience, it’s helpful to form systematical guidance for the user experience of multimedia in videotelephony or videoconferencing services, which not only summarize information on existing Recommendations related to the quality of mainstream multimedia, but also studies the key influencing factors and subjective methodologies of substream multimedia and extended multimedia functions to fill the gaps.
