Summary: At present, although many countries around the world attach great importance to school management, there still exist certain gaps in the level of smart school management in different countries, regions, and schools. In a broad perspective, “school” refers to places where formal education takes place, including elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, vocational schools, colleges, and universities (online schools are excluded from the scope of this draft Recommendation). Although the focus of school management varies according to different types of schools, and different countries and regions have different policies on education management, the common aspects of school management include Security management, Teaching assessment, Academic affair management, and School life management. Also, all schools have similar objectives and pursuits in management, which are summarized as improving the efficiency of management, ensuring the quality of education, and guaranteeing the life and safety of students. This draft Recommendation focuses on the utilization of IoT technologies in school management. It will benefit school administrations by improving intelligent level in school security, teaching assessment, academic affairs, and school life, ultimately increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of school management. In smart school management system (SSMS), IoT infrastructure can act as a collector of school management status and a controller of management signals. By sensing, collecting, and identifying school related management information, combined with cloud computing and AI technologies, SSMS is capable of data processing, data analysis, data management, and data visualization. This enables school administrations to achieve real-time monitoring, early warning, and actionable intelligence in management issues. In addition, although the smart school management concentrates primarily on things on campus, it also involves things outside the campus, such as school bus remote monitoring and equipment leasing remote control. At last but not the least, schools should selectively adopt the capabilities provided by SSMS based on local and national/regional policies and school needs. E.g., if certain SSMS applications involve personally identifiable information (PII), local and national/regional policies should be followed.
