Summary: With the rapid development of industry, connected vehicles can support ubiquitous connectivity to external communication networks. Meanwhile, the connected vehicles utilize peripheral equipment such as radars and cameras to collect data. Based on the vehicles' local processing and the cooperation with other vehicles, road infrastructure and cloud server, multiple application scenarios of vehicle system have been implemented. In order to provide consistency and continuous service in a wider range of communication to users, the vehicle system should support both WWAN with high bandwidth and low latency and wireless short-range communication networks for same application. Thus, the vehicle system should have a unified functionality of network selection to ensure how to collaborate different communication networks, how to process data from multiple communication networks to support certain application, etc. Take the application based on traffic light information as an example. In the heterogeneous access network environment, the vehicle system can use both IMT-2020 and C-V2X to support traffic light information, so the vehicle system can receive the traffic light information from the cloud server through WWAN and from RSU through wireless short-range communication network simultaneously. It is important to define the functional requirements of heterogeneous access network selection in session management. The vehicle system should have a unified requirement of network selection to manage service, which can avoid inconsistent service issues from different communication networks due to the delay or other problems. The vehicle system should support the functionality of different network quality analysis, and can process the receiving information, including data fusion, deduplication, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to initiate a work item on functional requirement and architecture of vehicular multimedia system for heterogeneous access network selection.
