Summary: Cable television have been carrying a set of multichannel video programmes in an RF format for a long time, using hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) or fibre optic cables; but, with the introduction of IP technology, some cable operators have started to carry them in an IP format as well. Depending on the prerequisites and requirements of each cable operator, this migration from RF to IP can happen in many different scenarios, each of which involves the use of different technologies, and incurs different cost as a result. It is therefore very important to choose the scenario that best meets the requirements of each cable operator. With this in mind, this draft Recommendation will define the prerequisites and requirement of cable television system before and after the migration from RF to IP. It also presents various scenarios for migration, along with technical issues that have to be addressed.
