Summary: In the last meetings, the group has worked on writing a Technical Paper on the “Architecture, function and service of home network” with the objective of agreeing the document at this meeting. This technical paper briefly describes the architecture of nowadays home networks, which can be composed of different sub-networks, making use of different technologies and including new roles for the devices (e.g., agents) as shown in Figure 1 (taken from the draft technical paper). Figure 1: General architecture of an end to end content delivery home network Since other SDOs are starting to address this new issue and working on the definition of the architecture of such new networks, ITU-T shall lead this new effort by providing at least: The definition of a “Heterogeneous Home Network”, understood as the network within the premises that allows to distribute content to the end user through a home networking technology or a collaboration of hoem networking technologies. A high-level architecture of the different building blocks of an “Heterogeneous Home Network”, including the main functions of each of the building blocks A consistent terminology to be used when talking about the devices, technologies and roles in the Heterogeneous Home Network A definition of the boundaries (demarcation points) of such Heterogeneous Home Network. While a technical paper is a good starting point, the group thinks further efforts and some formalization in the form of a new Recommendation is needed.
