Summary: The C-DOCSIS specification [ITU-T J.223.2] describes a method for distributed deployment and centralized control of a DOCSIS cable broadband access system. C-DOCSIS system can be applied in the ''FTTx+Coax'' network architecture. The Coax Media Converter (CMC) connects to a CM through the coaxial cable network in the downstream direction and to the CMC controller through the packet digital optical network in the upstream direction. According to the implementation of the CMC controller of R-MACPHY, the CMC of R-MACPHY can connect to layer-3 OLT, switch/router and layer-2 OLT, or switch/router. Within the past years, some Multiple Systems Operators (MSOs) have started to move their current centralized solutions to the distributed solutions, for example, from the legacy HFC solution based on the DOCSIS specifications to the distributed access solutions based on the DOCSIS specifications. Also some MSOs would like to move their legacy HFC solution to the FTTH solutions in the near future, after they deployed the distributed access solutions. In this contribution, one feasible architecture for this kind of migration is proposed, that is the unified optical and coaxial platform for the R-MACPHY architecture. In this unified solution, the CMC and ONU can connect to the OLT simultaneously, and these two kind of devices can be managed and controlled using the same management and control module. Through this solution, the MSOs could deploy the distributed R-MACPHY solution first, and later, if the MSOs would like to migrate to the FTTH solution, there is no need to change the headend to the OLT, because it was there in the field. This solutions will reduce the complexity of network evolution and support the smooth evolution from coaxial access to fiber access in the future. Although, the C-DOCSIS specification defined the requirements and basic architectures, but there is no definition about this kind of unified management/control platform solution. So, the unified optical and coaxial architecture solution is proposed based on the R-MACPHY architecture in this contribution.
