ITU Secretary-General Dr. Hamadoun I. Touré joined host Carlos Slim Helú, Rwandan President Paul Kagame and UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova at the 7th meeting of the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, held in Mexico City, where an ambitious new target that will mandate ‘gender equality in broadband access by the year 2020’ was agreed upon.

Dr Touré, who is also the co-Vice Chair of the Commission, stated that women’s access to ICTs and particularly broadband must be made a key pillar of the post-2015 global development agenda.

The meeting also included in-depth discussions on roadblocks to faster broadband deployment and potential solutions to impediments such as investment financing, and focused on innovative strategies to help countries accelerate progress towards achieving broadband access targets which was set by the commission in 2011.
