Abstract:

"Academia and ITU-T – Alliance for innovation in ICTs standards"

Dr Jamoussi’s presentation will provide an overview of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and will highlight the activities of its Standardization Sector (ITU-T) to engage academia in the development of international ICT standards.

It will introduce the new membership category for academia, created with a view to acknowledge the valuable contribution ITU received from the academic and research community and to strengthen this collaboration. It will present the Kaleidoscope academic conferences that aim to identify emerging ICTs and standards needs, and the Technology Watch reports that survey the ICT landscape to capture new topics for standardization. In addition, it will introduce some other initiatives targeting academia, such as the seminars for students to familiarize them with ITU-T activities; the internship program; lectures by ITU-T experts within the framework of academic programmes; and the ITU-T initiative on education about standardization. In this regard, it will introduce the TSB Director’s Ad hoc Group on Education about Standardization recently established with the aim to provide information to students on all aspects related to international standardization. The need to address international ICT standardization in academic curricula is vital for the students of today, as they will become the experts driving the standardization processes of tomorrow.
