Geneva, Switzerland 13 October 2014
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organized a forum on “Sustainable smart cities: from vision to reality” on 13 (morning) October 2014. The forum was followed by the sixth meeting of the
Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities (FG SSC) on 13 (afternoon) - 16 October 2014. The events was held at ITU's Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
“A smart sustainable city is an innovative city that uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) and other means to improve quality of life, efficiency of urban operation and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring that it meets the needs of present and future generations with respect to economic, social and environmental aspects”.
Based on the internationally agreed definition of a “smart sustainable city” that was developed by the ITU Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities (FG SSC) in June 2014, this forum built upon the previous works of the FG SSC and advance discussions on how to transform cities into smart and sustainable cities of the future that we want.
This forum discussed the necessary steps that need to be undertaken for the implementation of an ICT based smart sustainable city with the purpose of improving the livability and sustainability of cities around the world. The inputs of the forum were submitted to the FG SSC as contribution for the development of a "Roadmap for smart sustainable cities implementation".
This forum brought together leading specialists in the field, from city planners to engineers, designers, policy-makers, government officials, regulators, academia, standards experts and others to raise awareness on the role of ICT to build the cities we want.
