ITU/WMO/UNEP Workshop on "Resilience to Natural Hazards through AI Solutions"

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), organized a workshop on "Resilience to Natural Hazards through AI Solutions " in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization and UN Environment, hosted by NASA’s Goddard Earth Systems and Technology Center (GESTAR II) and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

The Workshop will take place on 13 March 2024, in Catonsville, Maryland, United States. The Workshop was followed by the 12th meeting of FG-AI4NDM on 14-15 March 2024 at the same venue.

Everyone was talking about AI. In this workshop, we delved into how AI can contribute to natural hazard resilience as well as some of its limitations.

Following opening remarks from our organizers (the University of Maryland Baltimore County, NASA, and the ITU/WMO/UNEP Focus Group) and high-level keynote presentations, the first technical session showcased how AI-based tools are being used in the field: to fill in gaps in weather radar observations, to automatically translate weather warnings, and to provide actionable intelligence from different types of observational data (e.g., for wildfires). In the second technical session, we discussed how AI is being used in research: to monitor ice melt or to assess disaster impacts. We also took a closer look at the diverse opportunities presented by a geospatial foundational model.

Participation was open to the ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates, ITU Academia, and to any individual from a country that is a member of the ITU and who wished to contribute to the work. This included individuals who are also members of international, regional and national organizations. Participation to the workshop was free of charge.
