FIRST-ITU Regional Symposium & Cyber Drill for Africa and Arab Regions, Dar Es Salaam, 13 –17 November 2017

The FIRST-ITU Regional Symposium for Africa and  Arab Regions, took place from 13th –15th November 2017 and the Applied learning for Emergency Response Teams (ALERT) cyber drill for Africa and Arab Regions, took place from 16th –17th November 2017.

 
The event held in Dar Es Sala​am, at Bank of Tanzania Conference Centre, at the kind invitation of Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). ​

This event was organized by the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of the International Telecommunication Union, in collaboration with the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST) and hosted by Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

 
The two first days were dedicated to two capacity building workshops tracks, the first one is on CIRT/CSIRT management and the second one on technical. To ensure the quality of courses, places were limited to 40 persons per track.

 
The third day was dedicated to FIRST-ITU symposium conference which was an open forum for ICT professionals and decision makers in government, industry, academia and NGOs to discuss their ideas for improving cybersecurity and resiliency for security in Arab and African regions. The conference topics of interest included: incident response, Forensic and Malware Analysis, Threat Intelligence, Internet Resilience, Internet Security Policies…

 
The two last days were dedicated to the cyber drill exercises structured around various scenarios involving the most common types of cyberattacks while the sharing sessions provides a platform for cooperation and discussions on cybersecurity. This Cyberdrill was open to the CIRTs/CSIRTs of Arab region who want to participate.

 
In line with the collaboration between ITU and FIRST, FIRST was pleased to support applications for FIRST membership from participants of ITU cyber drills

Purpose

The purpose of the symposium was to provide an appropriate platform for senior ICT and cyber security officials from the African and Arab region to discuss, formulate strategic directions and plans to tackle emerging threats to the global and regional Security sector  and the purpose of the cyberdrill was to enhance the communication and incident response capabilities of the participating teams as well as to ensure a continued collective effort in mitigating cyber threats among the Region’s national Computer Incident Response Teams (CIRTs) /Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs).  

 
The cyber ​drill exercise was structured around various scenarios involving the most common types of cyberattacks while the sharing sessions provides a platform for cooperation and discussions on cybersecurity.
