The Continua Design Guidelines utilizes the IHE Technical Framework for use with both its Health Reporting Network (HRN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) interfaces. This document, the Volume 2b of the IHE IT Infrastructure Technical Framework (IHE ITI TF), defines a subset of the functional components of the healthcare enterprise, called IHE actors, and specifies their interactions in terms of a set of coordinated, standards-based transactions.

As the scope of the IHE initiative expands, transactions based on other standards may be included as required.
