ITU Regional Presence for Asia and the Pacific

International Telecommunication Union (ITU), as a UN specialized agency for telecommunications/information and communication technologies (ICT), has been serving its members in such main areas as radiocommunication, standardization and development of telecommunications/ICT through its three Sectors - Radiocommunication (ITU-R), Telecommunication Standardization (ITU-T) and Telecommunication Development (ITU-D). ITU founded in 1865 has 193 Member States as well as over 700 Sector Members and Associates, while having its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as 4 regional offices and 7 areas offices worldwide.

 

Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand, and its Area offices in Jakarta, Indonesia, which have been serving some 40 Member States as well as over 70 Sector Members and Associates, for affordable and sustainable access to and use of telecommunications/ICT infrastructure and applications through assisting members for inclusive information and knowledge society with various development initiatives and projects based on public-private-people’s partnership as well as South-South and multi-stakeholders' cooperation.

The Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific has been hosted by the Government of Thailand at Bangkok since 27 November 1992. The Area Office for South-East Asia is hosted by the Government of Indonesia at Jakarta since 27 November 1984.

Asia-Pacific Centre of Excellence (ASP CoE)

Asia-Pacific Centre of Excellence offers one of the best telecommunication/ICT training opportunities in the region through its five Nodes and their network of partners. The aim of this project is to build a self-dependent mechanism in the Asia-Pacific region that would impart the necessary skills and knowledge required in the dynamic telecommunication/ICT sector. The Nodes lead the design and implementation of a distinct training programme in consultation with ITU and offers face-to-face as well as on-line training seminars.
