New technologies for rural applications
More than 40% of the planet's population live in rural and remote areas of developing countries. Of the small fraction that has any access to telecommunications, radio broadcasts and voice telephony have traditionally been the main services provided. Today, e-mail, e-commerce, tele-education, telehealth, and telemedicine, among others, have made access to interactive multimedia services as important for rural and remote communities as voice connectivity alone. Since each rural district or community requires a different mix of services to best meet its needs, today's telecommunication network operators must be able to support a wide range of services, applications, and bandwidth levels at a reasonable cost.
On the occasion of AFRICA 2001 the ITU is promoting universal access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the context of rural applications. The ITU Pavilion in Hall 5 showcases new technologies for rural applications. This project complements the recent publication of the report of ITU-D Focus Group 7, New Technologies for Rural Applications.
This special keynote session will present the findings of ITU-D Focus Group 7 and its six main recommendations for telecommunication authorities, regulators and operators.
