On the 28th being the Fourth Thursday in the month of April, 2016, AFRITEX WOMEN IN ICT INITIATIVE made their debut by joining other stakeholders world over to celebrate this year's Girls in ICT Day in FCT, Abuja, Nigeria.

We assembled over 200 Girls and young Women from different schools at the National Centre for Women Development, Abuja to a one day ICT Training, Workshop and Quiz competition.

In attendance were; The Honourable Minister of Communications, Barr. Adebayo Shittu, Hon. Minister for Women Affairs ad Child development, Hajia, Alhassan, ably represented by one of the Deputy Directors in the Ministry. Representatives from the FCT, Secondary Education Board , The Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Telecommunications Commission represented by one of His directors was in attendance too. Other top civil servants, Directors from different Ministries and teachers from different schools all graced the occasion.

The Honourable Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, declared the ceremony open with his keynote address which pointed the low representation of women in the ICT industry and encouraged the Girls to develop a passion for ICT and take up careers in the ICT sector.

After the Minister's welcome address, TD4Pai facilitated the workshop session which was followed by a video presentation and quiz competition.

The schools that came first, second and third during the quiz competition went home with computers and printers with cash prizes while the rest of the students were handed smart phones to further equip them in their ICT pursuit.

After the workshop, virtual presentation, quiz competition, and gifts presentation session, a panel session which brought together Women who are ICT practitioners to a round table for a mentoring session for the Girls and young women.

After the whole exercise, the school girls expressed their excitement at the knowledge acquired during the event and wished the activities would continue.

Responses gotten from most of the students during the interview session ignited the passion we have for the girls' representation in the ICT sector and AFRITEX WOMEN IN ICT INITIATIVE decided to launch a "Tech Needs Girls" project which will take the sensitization campaign to different schools, equip the Girls with ICT skills and equip their ICT labs with relevant  tools needed.
