Jakarta, Indonesia, 2015, April 23

This event was organized by GETIT, Inc and supported by the Ministry of Communications and the ITU rep office in Jakarta. It was held at @america, which is the cultural center of the US Embassy and located at Pacific Mall in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The event was attended by 30 students from a local school of communications and another 30 other women and girls from local organizations focused on Girls in ICT. The event was opened with remarks from Kristen Bauer, the Deputy Chief of Mission for the US embassy in Jakarta; by Septriana Tangkari , Director of ICT empowerment from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology,Indonesia; by Aurora Rubio, Head for Area Office for South east Asia, ITU; and Laina Greene, CEO of GETIT, Inc based in Silicon Valley with a rep office in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The opening remarks were followed by a great interactive panel discussion moderated by Dian Irawati, founder of BOI Research. The panelists were: Fransiska Putri Wina Hadiwidjana, a young 26 year old Programmer; Nancy Margried Panjaitan, CEO of Batik Fractal Indonesia; Deva Rachman, Director of Corporate Affairs at Intel; Anantya Van Bronckhorst, CEO of Think.Web and founder of Girls in Tech; and Andgzia Murni Prasast, a young 20 year old Coach of Clevio Coder Camp for Girls. Discussion was very animated and there were great questions from the audience. One of the highlights included a discussion with two 11 year old girls, who graduated from the Coder Camp for Girls. They were very inspired about being able to create their own apps and now one of the girls who is diabetic herself is looking to start her own venture to create apps to help children living with diabetes. Overall a very upbeat and inspiring conversations and one audience member even tweeted that that she had a “aha” moment during these discussions.

People hung around for almost an hour after the event ended, which also showed the quality of discussion and the sense of inspiration that transpired throughout the day. Definitely a success and we are now discussing with Intel, Girls in Tech and Coder Camp for Girls to organize more activities next year around Girls In ICT. There is renewed interest to have more focus on the issues of Girls in ICT in Indonesia.
